Creating an Asset Management Win-Win
Culture
As a professional maintenance engineering and physical asset management strategist, my career has been studiously built around analysing and hence delivering clarity to my clients in terms of effective physical asset management and yet. Even with 30+ years experience in this arena, its remains quite clear to me, that asset management to all intense and purpose remains a broad and extremely loose term which is all to readily used to underwrite what is an extremely complex and demanding business support science. Therein I would respectfully suggest resides the dilution of clarity that I frequently encounter when first engaging with my clients. Simply because the majority of asset management regimes that I initially explore often appear to be poorly conceived and even of reckless intent. A situation that quite rightly raises big questions for me about the validity of such a function as a vital sustainability tool in terms of what it and all the mechanisms that underwrite it, actually bring to my clients steady business state.
The bottom line for me is that physical asset management must always be clearly defined from each specific applications perspective and hence driven from; expansive business intelligence, business legacy, operational and commercial sensitivity intent. In essence all effective asset management rationales must be of a reflective service delivery intent and therein must be developed, validated, ratified and only then implemented with due diligence at the point such undertaking make good business sense. You see; all the most prolific and hence sustainable asset management regimes have as there core drivers, inputs capable of continuously analysing and hence responding in a coherent and transposable fashion, to the multitude of fluid dynamics that are most likely to impact any businesses steady business state in any given business cycle.
Therefore effective asset management can only be assured when the necessary degree of intellect is continuously invested into this most necessary business function, a proactive line of engagement which must be bolstered by a high degree of clarity in terms of effectively imposing balance and checks upon the businesses overall; risk mitigation, life cycle management, quality, safety, compliance and operational cost liabilities.
In essence I guess what I’m saying is that in pursuit of a win-win, best in class and responsive asset management solution; effective physical asset management must be a complete and structured approach to the short, medium and long-term management of assets as tools for the efficient and valuable steady business state service delivery and hence long term business sustainability. It never ceases to amaze me how apparently highly evolved businesses with very impressive portfolios continually struggle to come to terms with the concept of smart effective business thinking. Often when I speak to clients in this mind set, I frequently discover that for whatever reason they’re unable to either conceptualise and/or tap into the intelligence that exists within their business. They are therefore always apparently on the back foot simply because they’re unable to either prescriptively consolidate and/or grow. It’s therefore no wonder that they continually find themselves floundering and/or trapped in a Groundhog Day scenario, where they repeatedly make the same mistakes time and time again. Because they either grow or downsize too quickly around any given economic trend whilst continually compromising their overall sustainability and business efficiencies through a lack of overall corporate clarity. A situation which inevitably filters through their entire business generating a lack of individual transparency and hence direct accountancy.with clarity.
