Case Study Exloring The Issue of Business Psychosis
I’ve used the term business psychosis for many years now when giving presentations about and around some of the issues that some businesses face during any given business cycle. But it wasn’t until recently that one client’s representative expressed a highly intense fascination with my evocative diagnosis of business psychosis and therein asked me to qualify further what I meant by business psychosis in relation to his particular business.
But before I expand further upon business psychosis it’s perhaps helpful to explore psychosis in terms of its day to day clinical presentation. You see; people experiencing either mild or exaggerated psychosis may frequently report delusional beliefs etc, and may also exhibit personality changes that are frequently subject to intense oscillation, which thereafter if not treated with effective due diligence can move individual suffers into either marginal self harm and/or even suicide.
Now whilst I have no clinical or medical qualifications etc, I nevertheless have a genuine sympathy for anyone suffering from clinical psychosis and therefore would never choose to satirize its presentation in anyway shape of form simply to underwrite my commercial existence and I wish to make that very clear from the start. Nevertheless I sort of coined the phrase business psychosis many years ago simply because I frequently encountered and/or was asked to support businesses who were clearly suffering from psychosis in terms of their view of their business.
But what you may ask is business psychosis? Well in answer it doesn’t get any more complicated than this; if a business has lost the plot in terms of who it is, what it can and what it can’t reasonably do or achieve in any given time frame and/or I find that it is under the influence of delusional thoughts. Then clearly to me it’s in a state of aggravated psychosis from a business intelligence perspective and I don’t’ need either medical or clinical qualifications to arrive at that diagnosis.
Nevertheless when I encounter a business in a state of business psychosis the most challenging issues that I face in terms of helping that business move forward and away from such negative impediments. Are; how do I get that business to understand that it needs help in recognising that its suffering from business psychosis and thereafter how do I formulate an effective recovery strategy that the business can both understand and buy into. There is however one other sobering thought that we all must accept as interim professionals when we begin to work with and/or support a business suffering from business psychosis, which states that sometimes we simply can’t help them. You see; there are just some businesses out there who are suffering from business psychosis that are simply unable to accept that they need help.
In that situation I’m both inclined to suggest that perhaps the best possible course for all those concerned is to simply accept that there is absolutely no synergy in even attempting to work together. Therein it makes smart commercial sense to close down all dialogue on all related matters in a none confrontational fashion but actually with immediate effect. Notwithstanding that previous point it should be noted that I’m always happy to support any business through their own unique business psychosis if they truly wish to be free of the same. But if they’re happy to remain in a state of business psychosis then we all too often and quickly have to mutually agree that perhaps the best way forward is to simply accept that its best if we go our own sweet but separate ways.
