Case Study Exploring Business Expansion
Expansion always brings tremendous risk if sufficient energy and intellect is not a put into benchmarking the businesses current market and/or predictable market position prior to committing to any strategic expansion programme.
You see; expansion by default requires detailed operational business case analysis prior to setting short, medium or long term business goals. Only when that is in place should expansion planning commence and/or be shelved if there is not the desired level of intellectual and/or confidence in place to underwrite the businesses client focused and operational service delivery expansion undertakings.
You see; history suggests that the key to any businesses effective survival is much more than simply securing overall micro and macro market share. Because business survival is more about retaining operational business intellect, improving quality by removing unnecessary waste, whilst meeting the businesses predefined service level agreements. A happy client will always return to their supply chain, whereas an unhappy client will always explore new horizons and it really doesn't get any more complicated than that.
Therefore and in terms of smart, efficient and considered business expansion undertakings at this time, I’m more than inclined to suggest that in these turbulent times it’s perhaps not the business that we do that underwrites our ultimate survival, it’s clearly the business that we don’t do. You see, bad business or mantra driven business initiatives developed around flawed business intellect are nothing more than a recipe for business depression and certainly not business expansion if they were ill conceived in the first.
I therefore urge all my b2b clients to think long and hard before they embark at full steam ahead into un-chartered waters, that they both explore and validate their businesses current health and sustainability position and then base their next business initiative upon understanding prescriptively the probable ramifications of everything they’re about to undertake in terms of business expansion.Otherwise there is always great potential to generate little reward for a great deal of investment whilst directly imposing completely avoidable business suffering upon the business which both directly and indirectly could see the business being aggressively pushed into an ultimately steep and emotionally charged demise.

It never ceases to amaze me how apparently highly evolved businesses with very impressive portfolios continually struggle to come to terms with the concept of smart effective business thinking. Often when I speak to clients in this mind set, I frequently discover that for whatever reason they’re unable to either conceptualise and/or tap into the intelligence that exists within their business. They are therefore always apparently on the back foot simply because they’re unable to either prescriptively consolidate and/or grow with clarity. It’s therefore no wonder that they continually find themselves floundering and/or trapped in a Groundhog Day scenario, where they repeatedly make the same mistakes time and time again
