Pragmatic Freelance Facilities Management
As a facilities manager with over 25 years experience from shop floor to director and even head of strategic business development, I often wonder why it is that (a) so many businesses make such a mess of providing this first principle business function and (b) why it is that there are so many non FM professionally qualified service providers responsible for delivery operational and executive FM services within facilities management throughout the UK.
However; whilst I cannot change the very real and negative impact that point (b) imposes upon the FM business in general, experience dictates that in terms of point (a) I am able to deliver world class soft and hard FM business solutions and that’s why my clients choose to engage me on either fixed term or flexible assignments.
Look; I make no secret of the fact that I’m a highly qualified and experienced estates, facilities and property portfolio manager and executive director who has a sound track record in making a very real difference to any business providing or supplying FM in any arena be that nationally or internationally.
The secret to effective facilities management as far as I’m concerned is to be; suitably experienced and qualified in all associated; technical, customer experience and human resource arenas whilst meeting all necessary safety, quality, commercial and stakeholder compliance commitments. However my concern is that there are far too many FM services providers who simply pick and choose what they feel most comfortable at specialising in whilst simultaneously ignoring and/or off loading key components of FM service delivery to anyone and sundry and that’s why I believe the UK’s FM business is in such a mess.
In terms of my facilities, estates or property portfolio management undertakings on behalf of my clients I deliver exactly what I say on my box i.e. high calibre; hard, soft, technical, strategic, planning, safety, quality, commercial and stakeholder focused FM service delivery compliance and it doesn’t get any more complicated than that. Simply because that’s what a highly qualified FM service provider should be able to do.
So then; if your FM or FM service providers can’t or don’t wish to provide that level of service to or for you, then I would respectfully suggest that you’re in very real danger of (a) being ripped off completely and/or (b) possibly even presented at any moment in time with highly preventable litigation or manslaughter charges as a result of failures of due diligence. Therefore you would be wise to address such under performance as a matter of high priority.
